At the Yellowstone National Park, you may notice that some dead lodgepole pine trees near hydrothermal features are white at the bottom. We call them « Bobby Socks » trees, as if they were wearing white socks from the 50s. This phenomenon is due to an unusual absorption of a natural chemical element called silica.
