Morning : went out to an amphitheatre to talk about the history of volcanology and the psychology of science.
Afternoon : ate some home made sandwiches with a wonderful view over the port.
Highlight of the day : went to an observatory on Lipari to learn about the formation and ageing processes of certain types of volcanos, as well as what a volcanologist will need to study volcanos.

Anecdote of the day : if you fall down, you will have infact, fallen down.

Opon arrival at the island, we had the pleasant discovery of a wild and imposing view.
The town is quaint and calm, perfectly representing its inhabitants.
Flora and fauna are overwhelmingly present and diverse. The hike up the the national observatory was arduous and refreshing, with many different specimen of flora.
Bruno took us to an amphitheatre with roman stone coffins, overlooking Vulcano, the view was breathtaking. Bruno gave us knowledge about the history of volcanology and epistemology, this was the most memorable part of the day.

Ce matin nous prenons le bateau pour Vulcano.
Nous commençons à gravir le volcan que nous avons admiré hier depuis Lipari.
Nous marchons dans les cendres , les lapilli et les blocs (pouvant peser plusieurs tonnes), nous apprenons (entre autres !) que ces 3 éléments agglomérés constituent la brèche.
Sans transition nous passons du gris de la brèche au tuf rose (agglomérat très friable composé de cendres).
L’arrivée au bord du cratère nous permet d’apprécier l’activité des fumerolles, que nous avions en point de mire depuis le matin.
Nous continuons le tour du cratère en admirant la dimension de la caldera et sa verdoyance qui signe son ancienneté.
L’arrivée au sommet nous offre une vue à 360° englobant Lipari et son belvédère, le Vulcanello et sa plaque de lave, le Stromboli et l’Etna enneigé au loin !
Nous redescendons pique niquer dans le village car il est interdit de rester sur le volcan au delà de 11h30.
Après toutes ces découvertes (et ces efforts !) nous apprécions la fraîcheur de l’eau localement réchauffée par les « bouillons » volcaniques...un jacuzzi dans la mer tyrrhénienne.
